In fact...one study found that the percentage of ghrelin rose to a higher percentage than the percentage of total body weight lost.

I've mentioned the thermic effect of food that favours lean people above, however adaptive thermogenesis is something far more annoying for the overweight. Whenever you attempt to lose weight and reduce the amount of calories you consume, your body has the ability of becoming more efficient. This is because we share the bodies of our hunter-gatherer ancestors, for them to survive, their bodies had to make adjustments when they couldn't catch what they were hunting on a particular week. Adaptive thermogenesis allowed them to survive on fewer calories when ever the needed amount of calories were not available (our bodies still do this). So by simulating this shortage of food by dieting, for example, taking in 6ook/cals less would have no effect on weight loss if adaptive thermogenesis had taken place because your in a kind of starvation mode.
